The Illegal by Lawrence Hill is the 2016 College of Arts & Science Book Club selection. Winner of CBC’s Canada Reads 2016 competition, the novel is the compelling story of a refugee on the run for his family’s survival.
Lawrence Hill is an award-winning and internationally bestselling Canadian author of 10 books of fiction and non-fiction. His novel The Book of Negroes was adapted into a television miniseries last year and another series is in the works for The Illegal. The Book of Negroes (2007) received The Rogers/Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize, the CBC Radio’s Canada Reads and Radio Canada’s Le Combat des livres and The Commonwealth Prize for Best Book. Hill’s non-fiction book, Blood: The Stuff of Life (2013), was the basis for the 2013 Massey Lectures, which he delivered across Canada.
