The Golden Age stands out as one of Australian playwright Louis Nowra’s greatest theatrical achievements. Inspired by a true story, Nowra’s haunting and timeless play focuses of a group of feral exiles discovered in the Tasmanian outback in 1939, lost descendants of those who were transported to Port Arthur in the previous century. Once discovered, the group faces the challenge of integrating into a modern Australian society full of unfamiliar traditions, expectations and constraints. Nowra’s poetic style blends aspects of historical fact with Australian folklore and Greek mythology into a thought-provoking opus on love and alienation in a post-colonial world.
