Department of Music faculty member has a record of academic innovation

Department of Music associate professor Dr. Jennifer Lang (PhD) has been appointed to a six-month term as acting vice-dean academic for the College of Arts and Science.

Lang will take on the position starting Jan. 1, 2024, when Dr. Lorin Elias (PhD) begins a planned administrative leave.

Lang is a highly recognized teacher and scholar who recently received a University of Saskatchewan Students’ Union Teaching Excellence Award and the College of Arts and Science’s Publicly Engaged Scholar Award.

A former secondary school music teacher who obtained her PhD in music education from the University of Western Ontario, Lang has been a faculty member and director of choral activities in the College of Arts and Science since 2015. She has shown a commitment to academic innovation at the University of Saskatchewan (USask), having developed the recently launched Master of Music in Music Education thesis-based and course-based degree programs. She also created multiple new music education courses to underpin these programs.

Lang co-leads the university’s Health and Wellness signature area of research and has developed new courses in the area of music and wellbeing, along with an interdisciplinary Certificate in Music and Wellbeing.

Lang is also active in administrative service at USask. She currently serves as the Department of Music’s graduate chair and chair of music education. She is also a member of the University RSAW Committee; a member of the College of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (CGPS) Interdisciplinary Studies Committee; and the vice-chair of the CGPS Postdoctoral Advisory Committee. She has previously been a member or chair of numerous department and college committees.

The vice-dean academic is an essential member of the College of Arts and Science leadership team and a key liaison with the Office of the Vice-Provost, Students and Learning.
