Abstract

This lecture/performance focuses on Glen Gillis’s latest composition, Divergence, for alto saxophone and piano. Dr. Gillis wrote it for, and premiered it at, the 2018 World Saxophone Congress in Zagreb, Croatia. Intimately familiar with the instrument, the composer-performer will demonstrate various performance techniques apropos to the saxophone and utilized in Divergence. Musical ideas expressed through compositional elements in the multiple sections of the music will be discussed. The composition was also written with the well-known collaborative musician Bonnie Nicholson in mind.
