About this event

The Department of Sociology is sponsoring this talk by Kristoffer Chelsom Vogt, who is a professor and the head of the Department of Sociology at the University of Bergen, Norway.

The increased importance of education credentials in determining life chances, has been used to support the argument that boys’ educational underachievement is detrimental to their futures as men. Of Boys and Men: Why the Modern Male is Struggling (Reeves, 2002) is an influential example of the argument that gender differentials in educational attainment is evidence that “modern males are struggling”.

Set against this backdrop, Professor Kristoffer Chelsom Vogt presents an overview of gender differences among young people in education, employment, and welfare in Norway. The research shows that women's superior educational performance is offset by men’s consistent and persistent labour market advantages. The closing discussion reflects on the background for, and possible consequences of, overly negative/pessimistic depictions of boys and their future as men.
